Disney turns Snapchat users into avatars using augmented reality

Avatar: The Way of Water is less than a month away from release and they are joining social networks and advanced technology to promote it.

Disney is promoting the upcoming feature film Avatar: The Way of Water on social media. This time the epicenter of the creative action is Snapchat, where they’ve launched a custom augmented reality lens that transforms the user into a Na’vi.

The film is set to hit theaters in the United States, December 16 to be exact, the same date it will hit theaters in Peru. About the campaign they revealed that the lens uses advanced computer vision, machine learning technology.

Specifically, adversarial generative neural networks and 3D graphics are used to transform Snapchatters’ eyes, hair, head shape, mouth, and skin as they move, in turn providing a blue-striped texture and triggering all the frames locally on the device.

Snap Inc. said the lens debuted Monday and will be unveiled as the First Lens Snapchat on Dec. 15, the day before the film opens. The two companies have previously collaborated on special AR lenses for the Disney PhotoPass service using Camera Kit.
