Disney CFO Christine McCarthy commented the recent suspension of showings of the company’s new films in Russia due to the conflict in Ukraine.
According to her, the Russian and Ukrainian markets collectively account for only 2% of the company’s total business. The share of Ukraine in these 2% is 10%. Despite this, McCarthy stressed that the situation is “quite unpleasant.”
Theatrical distribution is not the only part of our business in Russia. We have many different relationships and business ventures in this country, including licensing. But this is only 2% of our entire business. For us, this is a small number.
A commonplace example is Avengers: Endgame. The total collection of the picture around the world stopped at around $ 2.8 billion. Collections in Russia amounted to $45 million – this is only 1.64% of the total figure of the tape’s collections.
Earlier, Disney, along with Warner Bros., Universal, Sony and Paramount Pictures, suspended the distribution of their films in Russia. After that, cinema chains and owners’ associations expressed concern that the halls simply would not survive if at least the May premieres of the Doctor Strange sequel level did not appear at the box office.
