New Disney Policy to Restrict Access for Theme Park Visitors with Disabilities

Measured Changes to Disability Access Service at Disney Theme Parks Cause Uncertainty

Disney will soon change its policies for theme park visitors with disabilities, restricting eligibility for services that help some people avoid waiting in line for rides. The updates, which have caused a wave of uncertainty among fans, were posted on park websites this week. Disney acknowledges that misuse of the program by some visitors has prompted this change as they take steps to crack down on abuse.

Widely Requested Service Sees Significant Growth

According to Disney, disability access has become the most widely requested service at its parks, with usage more than tripling over the past five years. The surge in demand coincides with the introduction of Genie Plus in 2021, a paid service enabling individuals to skip long lines.

Eligibility Updates and Impact on Visitors

Starting on May 20 at Walt Disney World and on June 18 at Disneyland, the changes to the disability access program will restrict access to individuals with a developmental disability like autism, limiting their ability to wait in the conventional queue for an extended period. The new guidelines state that the service will be available to the individual needing it and their immediate family members only, or a maximum of four people if not immediate family. The program, as it currently stands, accommodates a party of six.

Concerns and Assistance Options

The policy update has led visitors to express concerns regarding potential limitations for individuals with other health issues, such as multiple sclerosis, anxiety, breathing issues, and Crohn’s disease. Visitors are encouraged to check the updated websites to explore a suite of services available for guests with disabilities that match their specific needs. Disney assures visitors that health professionals from Inspire Health Alliance will be available to help employees determine eligibility as needed, without requiring documentation.

Disney’s Commitment to an Enjoyable Experience

Disney stated it is dedicated to providing a great experience for all guests, including individuals with disabilities. The company clarified that changes to the disability access program were necessary to preserve its intended purpose and to ensure a high-quality experience for those who genuinely require the service. False statements to obtain the disability service are strictly warned against, as they will result in permanent barring from Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort.

Options for Easier Queueing and Assistance

Disney is not only updating the eligibility and service limits but also introducing options to assist visitors with difficulty in waiting. To allow specific individuals to maintain frequent restroom access, a “return to queue” process is being implemented, although details have not been fully disclosed. Additionally, more trained cast members will be available to direct and assist visitors in finding the most suitable options to meet their needs.

Inspiring a Safe and Accommodating Vacation Spot

While the policy amendments aim to tackle misuse, visitors have raised concerns about the perceived difficulty in navigating the parks. As the changes take effect, Disneyland visitors will have the option to use a virtual video chat ahead of their trip or consult with someone in person at the parks. Alternatively, visitors to Walt Disney World will have the option of a virtual video chat, available in advance or at the park.

Disney theme parks have a strong intent to be a welcoming destination for individuals with disabilities, enabling a wonderful time for everyone. The changes to the disability access program aim to strike a balance between providing suitable assistance and discouraging misuse.
