Walt Disney Studios on Thursday postponed the release of the second Avatar movie and a new Star Wars movie for a year. Mulan will not be in the cinema for the time being either.
James Cameron’s sequel to his 2009 movie hit Avatar was originally scheduled to hit theaters in late 2021, but the release has now been delayed by a year. A new Star Wars movie that was slated to open in 2022 will now hit theaters late 2023.
Disney has also postponed the worldwide premiere of the live action film Mulan indefinitely. The film, an adaptation of the 1998 animated film, was originally due to be released on July 24, but had already shifted to the end of August due to the corona crisis.
“It is clear that nothing can be certain when it comes to how we release our films during this global health crisis,” a Disney spokesperson said Thursday. “Today means pausing our release plans for Mulan and seeing how we can best show the film to a global audience.”
The postponement of Mulan’s release follows Warner Bros.’s decision. to stop Christopher Nolans Tenet’s premiere indefinitely. Cinemas around the world had pinned their hopes on both summer movies to draw audiences after being closed for months.
Recordings Avatar 2 had already resumed
Director James Cameron is working on four sequels to his blockbuster Avatar. Before the corona crisis, production had already suffered several delays. The recordings, which take place in New Zealand studios, had to be stopped in March. Now that measures in the country were relaxed in May, the turning period could be resumed.
Avatar (2009) is about a soldier who infiltrates an alien planet through a special technique, with which he gets the body of a local resident. The fantasy film, which was nominated for nine Oscars, had a turnover of more than 2.7 billion dollars (about 2.4 billion euros), making it the highest-earning film of all time. That record was broken in 2019 by Avengers: Endgame.
