Spectacular volcanic eruptions, an unusual love story and two people who feel more comfortable where every wrong step could mean death. “Fiery Love” is my Movie of the Year 2022 and is available exclusively with a Disney+ membership.
Only arrived in October 2022 “Burning Love” in German cinemas, it mistakenly received little attention there and ended up with the streaming service in a very short time Disney+. The title sounds a bit like a soap opera. But behind “Fiery Love” is a breathtaking mix of nature documentary and love story with two extraordinary protagonists: inside.
This is Love on Fire on Disney+
The documentary by director Sara Dosa revolves around Katia and Maurice KrafftFrench newlywedsit’s the life that Volcano exploration dedicated. With their fearless way of getting dangerously close to active volcanoes, the two have attracted a lot of media interest. The Kraffts have ended up in numerous TV shows and were pretty much the same in the 70’s and 80’s Earth science pop star.
On their hikes to the bubbling lava giants a lot of photographic and film materialthe one for documentation poetically put together wanted.
Who knew hell was so good?
If there’s a place on earth that comes closest to the traditional idea of hell, it’s here mouth of a volcano. The incandescent lava masses host a immense destructive power, which breaks again and again in powerful explosions. Very few people would even think of approaching such a fire eater.
Yet Katia and Maurice Krafft They are different. The two are attracted to volcanoes as moths are attracted to light, they want to spend every free minute of their lives in front of a burning inferno and get as close as possible. They do not fear death or serious injury. Maurice has that too I dream of canoeing down a lava flow.
Throughout their lives, the Kraffts took high risks, which we viewers now benefit from. From a safe distance we can fully concentrate on the beauty of the natural spectacle concentrate without fear of being crushed by mighty lava boulders. “Fiery Love” reminds us of that Huge forces lie dormant on our planetand proves that even a fraction of it far exceeds our power.
An incredible couple
Of the 16mm coarse grain filmin which Katia and Maurice Krafft filmed their expeditions hypnotically bubbling lava and the kind panting narrator by the artist Miranda July (in the original language) give the documentation a dreamy quality. Appropriate, because the story content is too crazy to be true.
It is difficult to understand that a single person could be so passionate about volcanoes any escape reflex or fully rational risk assessment goes into the background. It’s even more amazing than that found two such people and they even grew up a few miles apart.
When Katia and Maurice then also in bulky protective suits fire-breathing throats approach and there like astronauts from a 1950s sci-fi movie watch exploring an alien planet, the surreal experience will be perfect.
The two crazy adrenaline junkies or meticulous scientists? Probably both. However for me it is clear: Your passion is contagious!
“Fiery love” has many facets
“Fiery Love” is a film that has gathered me on as many levels as there are layers of rock on earth. It’s a beautiful naturedokpoetic love storyfun adventure and more engaging disaster thrillerbut also a philosophical essay on the nature of the human being in the face of the overwhelming forces of nature.
Also, my favorite movie of 2022 is fascinating Portrait of two incomprehensible individualswhose love of volcanoes causes her to ignore all dangers, leading her to the pit of hell to find her calling.
If you have a Disney+ membership, you should get this one Don’t miss the highlight of the documentary.
