Netflix is and will remain the largest streaming service and services such as Disney + and HBO Max will probably do little about it for the time being. A while ago it was thought that Disney + could be a Netflix killer. But that’s probably never going to happen.
Emerce spoke about this with Marco de Ruiter of The Walt Disney Company. His job is to know “what Disney stands for in the Benelux”. And in doing so, he matches audience and content through marketing.
Consumers purchase more than one service
Regarding Disney +, De Ruiter thinks there is room for multiple streaming services. “In the US the average is just under two. In the Netherlands too there is room for more than one,” according to De Ruiter, who also says that he does not have a Netflix killer and believes in his own content. “The market is now overcome by a fear of missing out. Ultimately, not everything is viable.”
In the end, he also does not believe that technology is the most important. The rider: “You win this battle primarily with content.” He also thinks there is always room for live television, which is a must for news, sports and big shows. “Every now and then everyone comes to the point of having no idea what to stream.”
And about the gap that still exists with Netflix? “With our few months we can still seriously accelerate,” De Ruiter closes the interview that you in its entirety on Emerce can read.
