Disney and Scarlett Johansson settle dispute over Black Widow proceeds

A lawsuit between Scarlett Johansson and Disney has been settled. The two parties have reached an agreement on the profit sharing of the film Black Widow. Details of what has been agreed have not been disclosed.

Johansson sued the film studio shortly after the premiere because it would lose money because Disney released the film in theaters and its own streaming service at the same time. The actress reasoned that the receipts at the cinema, of which she would receive a part, was lower because of watching at home. She also felt that her film was being used to market Disney+.

Disney simply said she would stick to the contract with Johansson and said she didn’t have a leg to stand on. Hollywood looked at the case with great interest, because the corona pandemic has changed the revenue model for films and streaming is becoming increasingly important.

New projects

Johansson says the matter has now been settled and she is looking forward to new projects at Disney. “I’m very proud of the work we’ve done together over the years and enjoyed my creative connection with the team.”

Disney also sounds pleased that the cold is out of the air. “I’m glad we came out together,” said a studio head. Johansson is already preparing for a film about the amusement park attraction Tower of Terror.

Johansson (36) has played the role of Black Widow in the Marvel films nine times since 2010, since her first appearance in Iron Man 2. Of movie Black Widow, in which the character was given the lead role, has raised around 325 million euros worldwide since July. In the first twenty days after the premiere, 50 million euros was raised via Disney+, where the film cost 21.99 euros.
