MOSCOW – Defense Minister Russia Sergei Shoigu dismissed Major General Vladimir Seliverstov from the post of commander of the 106th Airborne Division.
Seliverstov’s dismissal adds to a list of a dozen high-ranking military officers who have been removed since a brief coup by Wagner Group mercenaries last month.
General Seliverstov is known as a famous paratrooper commander in the Russian military.
Reports of his dismissal were first circulated by Russian pro-war channels, Military Informant and Cheka-OGPU, quoted by Ukrainian media, Mind, Sunday (16/7/2023).
General Seliverstov has been commanding the division fighting in Bakhmut since last January.
The reason for the general’s removal from command is still unknown, but according to an unnamed military officer, it may be due to Seliverstov’s obstinate character and his reluctance to remain silent when defending matters relating to Russian military personnel.
It was noted that Seliverstov did not always agree with the decisions of the Airborne Forces headquarters.
By channel Cheka-OGPU, The governor of the Tula Region Alexei Dyumin tried to defend the general during his visit to Moscow, but his efforts did not help resolve the situation with his dismissal.
