“The monument has never been restored. It became clear that there are serious cracks in the figures,” commented the regional governor of Sofia.

“There are serious cracks in the soldier’s legs, which are up to 4-5 cm in places – they have split along the entire length. The main reason is that at one time they poured concrete at the feet of the figures, and when moisture penetrates and freezes, the metal splits,” commented the restorer Marin Markov, who did the survey of MOCHA.

According to the regional governor, the scaffolding will be completed first, after which the tallest figures will be dismantled. They will be sorted and described, after which they will be taken to a place where they will be stored under guard.

After the restoration of the figures, they will be exhibited in a suitable place – in the Museum of Socialist Art.

Protesters also gathered on the spot.
