Justin Ress, USA, was the first swimmer to put his hand in the tile in the final of the 50 meter backstroke and celebrated the World Cup gold.
But then came the news that Ress had finished the race with an illicit finish. He finished underwater, which according to the judges went against the rules.
Second-placed compatriot Hunting Armstrong thought for a moment that the gold had gone to him.
– I am proud that I was second in the finish and will accept the gold because we want the USA to remain at the top. But it does not feel like a victory. Justin beat me fairly, I do not know what he was washed for but he deserved to win, Hunter Armstrong told SVT Sport after the finish.
But then came the next turn in the drama. The US protest went through and suddenly Ress was again a gold medalist in the distance.
