Disgruntled people and damaged roads. After training in Jūrmalciems, the Army leaves a profound post – Society and Politics – News

Ivars Krieders, a resident of Jūrmalciems, lives in one of the houses to which it is almost impossible to measure the road after the army training. One or the other cars get stuck here on the sandy road. Neighbor Jānis Cibulis is also dissatisfied – going to sea, having to go on foot, because it is too difficult to drive.

“If something is needed now, an ambulance, then it turns out that the road to this place, previously there is already paved, then we have to take it to a stretcher to this place, to the ambulance,” he says.

During the air defense exercises of the National Armed Forces, army units with military equipment moved around the village territory and left behind a thorough devastation. A similar valley of sorrow has been observed in the past, and now the mayor is full.

“In 2017, we also had problems – on this road, which we drove, where gravel was poured, if I’m not mistaken, 600 meters long. The army put it in order at its own expense, but it took us about three months to get a good result. Until we wrote a letter to the Minister of Defense, “says Aigars Weiss, a representative of Nīca County Council.

Ivars remembers that two army cars entered the yard during his studies. The soldiers did not understand where to get to the sea, so, without thinking much, they drove along the shortest route – across the countryside. Aigars Weiss, a representative of Nīca County Council, believes that the army has deceived the local population.

Military equipment has also traveled to Jūrmalciems beach. Weiss points out that the landfill is about eight kilometers away.

“They drove along the beach like on the highway. Although in principle they have a separate road, a separate driveway, and they were able to do it all from that side,” Weiss continues.

Andris Junkurs, a representative of the State Environmental Service, explains that no damage to nature has been established. The inspections were carried out both before and after the military exercises. Surveys of places where military equipment has moved and concluded that the beach has been eroded, but the storm and wind, which is gradually leveling out the unstable sand cover, have done their job.

A representative of the local government accuses the leadership of the armed forces of slow communication and unwillingness to cooperate. All this has led to public dissatisfaction and damaged roads.

NAF Air Force Commander Viesturs Masulis apologizes to the residents of Jūrmalciems for the paved road. He explains that already on June 27, the representatives went to Jūrmalciems and repaired the road. Masulis promises to coordinate the quality of roads with the residents in other years after the training, leaving the district. Until the road surface is restored to its original appearance, without leaving the battle area. The representative also promises to hold a face-to-face meeting with the municipality and the people of Jūrmala in the future to inform about the planned course of studies and answer all questions from those interested.
