(ANSA) – ROCCELLA JONICA, 31 OCT – After about two weeks, the landings of migrants have resumed at the port of Roccella Jonica. Today, at the end of a rescue operation carried out off the coast of the Ionian Sea by the soldiers of the Roccella Jonica Coast Guard, 59 migrants of predominantly Iraqi, Iranian and Afghan nationality landed on the dock of the port. Among them 39 men, 18 women and 2 minors. After disembarking, two migrants, due to various physical and health problems, were transferred to the Locri hospital for further health checks. At the time of the rescue at sea, the migrants were several tens of miles away from the Calabrian coast on board a sailing boat of about fifteen meters which left the coast of Turkey about a week ago. After the first medical and law enforcement checks, the migrants, at the request of the Prefecture of Reggio Calabria, were temporarily placed in the first aid and reception port tensile structure managed by the Red Cross and a team of Doctors Without Borders. With this latest arrival, the number of migrants landed in Roccella Jonica since the beginning of the year has risen to over 1,700. (HANDLE).
