Diseases – Freiburg im Breisgau – virologist Hengel does not expect a monkeypox epidemic – health

Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – The Freiburg virologist Hartmut Hengel does not expect a real epidemic after the first cases of monkeypox in Germany. The virus does not fly through the air, but is transmitted through skin contact and secretions. “That’s why the contagion dynamic that we expect is nowhere near the same as with Corona,” said the expert of the “Badische Zeitung” (Tuesday).

There is no vaccine against monkeypox approved in Germany. It is known, however, that vaccines against real smallpox also work well against monkeypox – they could be used in special cases.

Hengel expects that corresponding recommendations, for example for contact persons and clinical staff, will soon come due to the current events. “I would like that, because at the university hospital we treat patients who have to be isolated,” said Hengel from the University Hospital Freiburg, where the infected person from the Ortenau district is treated.

The first case of monkeypox has been detected in Baden-Württemberg. A patient from the Ortenau district with a corresponding infection has been treated as an inpatient at the University Hospital in Freiburg since Sunday evening.
