JAKARTA – Live disease free and Healthy old age is the hope of many people. However, women tend to have a higher rate of the disease than men.
Reporting from Express, Saturday (26/8/2023) new research shows that women can reduce their exposure to disease by improving their diet.
Researchers found diets high in pigmented carotenoids such as sweet potatoes, kale, spinach, watermelon, bell peppers, tomatoes, oranges and carrots can help protect the body from disease. These brightly colored fruits and vegetables are essential in preventing vision and cognitive loss.
“Men get a lot of the diseases that tend to kill you, but women get them less often or later so they survive but suffer from debilitating diseases,” said Billy R. Hammond, a professor at Franklin College, UGA.
“For example, of all cases of macular degeneration and dementia in the world, two-thirds are women. This disease that women have suffered for years is one that is easiest to prevent through lifestyle,” she continued.
The study reviewed and analyzed data from previous studies, detailing several degenerative conditions. These range from autoimmune diseases to dementia where, even controlling for age differences, the incidence rate is much higher in women than men.
“If you put all the autoimmune diseases together, almost 80 percent are women. So, because of this vulnerability, which is directly related to biology, women need extra preventive care,” explained Hammond.
One of the reasons for this vulnerability has to do with how women store vitamins and minerals in their bodies. Hammond pointed out that women, on average, have more body fat than men.
