Tobacco shops in our country had to close from Monday, but are now open again in the province of Antwerp. Governor Cathy Berx has adjusted this on the advice of the enclave municipality of Baarle-Hertog.

It seems a bit strange that tobacco is considered an essential product while health is a major concern at the moment. According to provincial governor Cathy Berx, tobacco is essential for smokers. “It would amount to a turn of power if the government used this to prescribe a healthy lifestyle on issues unrelated to the pandemic,” Berx said. “Banning tobacco now is detrimental to the psychological well-being of the smoker.”
