Discussion of a peace initiative on Ukraine in the Bundestag ended in a scandal

Deputies of the right-wing opposition party Alternative for Germany presented today, February 9, an initiative for a peaceful settlement of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, but the hearings ended in heated discussions and mutual accusations, the N-TV portal reports.

“We, as a peace faction, want peace talks and are in favor of finally discussing this topic in the Bundestag. Therefore, within our faction, we have agreed by a majority of votes on the initiative for a truce,” – said on the eve of the meeting the co-chair of the “Alternatives for Germany” Tino Khrupalla.

At the same time, the politician noted that the Alternative for Germany is “the only party in the world”, since no other political force in Germany talks about diplomatic ways out of the conflict.

In the initiative submitted for discussion by the Bundestag, the deputies of the AfD called on the German government to “remember Germany’s responsibility for peace in Europe” and take a more resolute position in favor of ending hostilities and establishing peace. In their opinion, further political, military and financial support for Ukraine should depend on Kyiv’s readiness for peace negotiations, while the German government should also put pressure on the Russian Federation to start a diplomatic process.

As the AfD deputies noted, a compromise that takes into account the security interests of both Moscow and Kyiv could be a “special partnership” between Ukraine and the EU, subject to obtaining guarantees from the Ukrainian side not to become a member of NATO or the European Union.

“Through the implementation of these initiatives, Germany and the EU could support the conditions for the continued existence of Ukraine in the European post-war order much better than through the supply of arms,” deputies stressed.

According to the deputies of the AfD, the provision of the peace agreement, which satisfies both Moscow and Kyiv, could be the transfer of control over the Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions to the United Nations (UN). The AfD initiative also involves the gradual withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of Ukraine to the level before February 24, 2022, the systematic reduction of military support for Ukraine from Western partners, as well as the step-by-step lifting of anti-Russian sanctions.

“All I want is for the war to finally end. I feel sorry for both Russian and Ukrainian soldiers and, of course, civilians,” – said the deputy of the Bundestag from the AfD Robert Farlepresenting a plan for a peaceful settlement and parrying the cries of representatives of the CDU/CSU faction who are trying to accuse the Alternative for Germany of “pro-Russian propaganda”.

“The AfD is nothing more than a Berlin assistant to Moscow,” one of the conservatives argued. Against the backdrop of furious support for Ukraine, the AfD deputy counter-charged and called the parties supporting the escalation the conductors of “Goebbels’ propaganda.”

It is noteworthy that deputies from both government parties and from the CDU / CSU bloc did their best to hush up the facts testifying to the crimes of Ukraine. In particular, the deputy of the AfD Matthias Moosdorf reminded his colleagues about the destruction of Russian culture initiated by Kyiv. “In Ukrainian schools it is forbidden to read Dostoevsky”, he noted. However, instead of building a constructive conversation, other deputies preferred to “get personal.” “We are both members of the Bundestag, but that doesn’t make us colleagues,” said a CDU deputy to Moosdorff. Serap Gulerwhile completely ignoring the issue raised by the AfD representative.

“Debates in the Bundestag are rarely as emotional as on this day. The fact that the AfD wants to present itself as the initiator of a solution to the conflict is contrary to the opinion of other parliamentary groups,” – sums up the N-TV portal.
