Discussion about St. Pauli’s goalkeeper: Bornemann finds criticism of Stojanovic “out of place”

FC St. Pauli is on the rise and is causing a sensation with spectacular offensive football. Most fans celebrate the coolness of striker Guido Burgstaller, the shrewdness of Daniel-Kofi Kyereh or the energetic performance of Rodrigo Zalazar. For many fans, however, a completely different Kiezkicker is the number one topic of conversation: The new number one.

Dejan Stojanovic has been the most discussed personality since the 4-3 win in Heidenheim at the latest. No other player at FC St. Pauli is as much in the spotlight as the goalkeeper who was signed as the successor to the demoted Robin Himmelmann at the beginning of January.

There is a lot going on in the fan forums. One can certainly say that the topic not only heats up the minds, but polarizes them.

FC St. Pauli: Discussion about goalkeeper Dejan Stojanovic

There are those who have conceded several goals against the 27-year-old in his five games so far and already describe his loan at the beginning of January as a mistake – and the others who defend Stojanovic against the sometimes fierce criticism, the positive aspects of his goalkeeping game in the Put in the foreground and still want to give it time.

The emotionality of the debate has, of course, to do with its predecessor and the circumstances of its resignation. Robin Himmelmann, whom many fans mourn, is no longer there – but still present. At least as a benchmark for the successor. A mortgage.

Stojanovic has not yet been able to show that he is a clear improvement over Himmelmann – at least from the outside.

St. Pauli has scored ten points in the five games with the Austrian in the box and for the first time this season played to zero (2-0 against Regensburg). On the other hand, it conceded nine goals.

Bornemann finds criticism of Stojanovic “out of place”

“We are very satisfied with Dejan”, says sports director Andreas Bornemann about the MOPO. “Since he has been here, we have had a different level of stability on the defensive – even if we have conceded too many goals.”

Bornemann does not see a goalkeeping problem at all and has no understanding for the sometimes harsh criticism of the new signing from Middlesbrough.

“You can discuss one or the other goal conceded and of course we address things critically internally if necessary,” explains Bornemann.

Stojanovic is not flawless, Bornemann knows that too and uses Heidenheim’s 1: 1 as an example. In front of Kleindienst’s header near the goal after a corner, the goalkeeper did not go energetically to the ball, but hesitated. Against Bochum (2: 3) Stojanovic looked unhappy in the Zoller tunnel before the 1-1 draw. Before the 2: 2 there was a coordination problem between Stojanovic, Philipp Ziereis and Daniel Buballa. “But we’re not talking about clear goalkeeping mistakes here. That is out of place, ”says Bornemann energetically.

FC St. Pauli: Himmelmann’s successor Dejan Stojanovic is under observation

On the other hand, Stojanovic St. Pauli has not yet saved a point or three with outstanding parades. The new number one needs a game like this to at least temporarily silence the critical voices and dispel doubts.

In the next 15 games he needs to become a sure and strong support. One or the other zero game would help. In order to convince even die-hard Himmelmann supporters, Stojanovic would have to hold up like Manuel Neuer.
