Malta will discuss Ukrainian President Zelensky’s “peace formula”
The deputy head of the Ukrainian presidential administration, Ihor Zhovkva, has announced that at the meeting in Malta, they will agree on the final formulation of the peace plan, as well as on when and where the global peace summit proposed by Kyiv could be held, which would start the implementation of the peace process.
Zelensky’s “peace formula” provides for the provision of food and energy to Ukraine, the release of prisoners and deported persons, the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the withdrawal of Russian troops and the cessation of the threat, as well as the prevention of the escalation and recurrence of aggression.
The meeting in Malta will follow similar ones this summer in the Danish capital Copenhagen and the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah.
CONTEXT:
On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops. Putin claimed that NATO was going to use Ukraine as a springboard for aggression against Russia, although there was no evidence for these claims. Ukraine believes that Putin’s real goal is to destroy Ukraine’s statehood and bring the territory under Moscow’s control.
A large-scale offensive failed, Ukraine did not give up, and upon receiving foreign military assistance, the Ukrainian army managed to stop the invaders and in the fall of 2022 also to liberate the Kharkiv region, to recover Kherson, but in the summer of 2023, a new Ukrainian counter-offensive began.
The progress of the counterattack is hampered by the lack of effective offensive weapons, minefields and the fortified positions of the Russian occupation forces, however, the Ukrainian army is gradually moving forward.
