Not to be an exception to the rule, the last images of the Earth that make up the header image mosaic, as well as some close-ups, were taken on December 5 and 6, 2021 by an instrument called VIIRS (Visible infrared imaging radiometer suite) aboard the satellite NOAA-21launched on November 10th.
NOAA-21 is the second of the United States Agency for Oceanic and Atmospheric Observation’s latest generation of polar-orbiting, non-geosynchronous environmental satellites (NOAA). Its VIIRS instrument collects images in the visible and infrared light spectrums, allowing scientists to see the details of the Earth’s surface.
