Underwater Robot Finds Debris of ‘Titanic’ Submarine

Jakarta – The US Coast Guard announced that an underwater robot (ROV) has discovered some debris from the ‘Titanic’ submarine, Titan, which was declared lost. One of the debris found was the tail cone of the Titan submarine.

According to a report by BBC on Friday (23/6/2023), Rear Admiral John Mauger stated that an ROV from the Arctic Horizon ship found the tail cone of the Titan submarine, approximately 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic wreck. In addition to the tail cone, officials also found five large pieces of debris around the Titanic site, including the nose cone, the outside of the pressure hull, and a larger debris field.

“On behalf of the US Coast Guard and throughout unified command, I extend my deepest condolences to the family,” Rear Adm. John Mauger said. “I can only imagine what this is like for them,” he added.

US Coast Guard officials have confirmed that the ROVs operating on the seabed around the Titanic will remain at the site. “In addition, we have been in close contact with the French and British consuls general to ensure that they are fully informed and their concerns are fully addressed,” said John Mauger. “The outpouring of support during this very complex search operation was very strong and very much appreciated.”

The company that operated the Titanic submarine, OceanGate, has officially declared five passengers on board the submarine missing. OceanGate expressed deep sorrow for the loss of their lives. “We now believe that our CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood, and his sons Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet have sadly disappeared,” OceanGate said in a statement.

The discovery of the debris has brought renewed attention to the tragic sinking of the Titanic and the ongoing efforts to explore and preserve the site. The search for more debris and any potential remains will continue as authorities work to gather more information about the fate of the submarine and its passengers.
