Discovery of New Extrasolar Planet, Shaped Like a Rugby Ball

TRIBUNNEWS.COM — Astronomers discovered a planet new.

The new exoplanet is planet which is not shaped like a planet in general which is round.

The planet is oval shaped like a rugby ball.

The planet, called WASP-103b, is one of the planet very hot, and is about 1,225 light-years from Earth in the constellation Hercules.

Quoted by Kopas.com from CNN, according to a study published in January 2022 in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics, this is due to the gravitational force of the parent star.

The planet, which was first discovered in 2014, was previously observed using the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes.

After identifying it, the research team wanted to get another view of planet WASP-103b used CHEOPS, a Swiss mission characterized by the European Space Agency (ESA), to combine with previous observations.

The satellite, which was launched in 2019, looks for planet potentially livable.

It then detects planets using the transit method, or measures the decrease in star brightness when a planet passes in front of the star.

Then, when astronomers watched WASP-103b pass in front of its star, they could see the shape of the planet as weird as a rugby ball.
