UCCA Edge has joined hands with the Matisse Museum of the Northern Province of France to select more than 280 precious works and collections, presenting for the first time in China the glory of Henri Matisse, a master of modernist art and a representative of the important art school “Fauvism” in the 20th century. Art life. This exhibition is named “Matisse by Matisse Matisse by Matisse” and follows the artist’s life and creative development trajectory. It is unfolded in 11 chapters. Through a systematic review of Matisse’s artistic creation, as well as the artist’s personal devotion Xinxue and its collection of treasures donated 70 years ago invite the Chinese audience to embark on a unique journey of discovery.
For this exhibition, paper-cut hanging designs are specially designed for the ceilings of each space in the Shanghai exhibition hall. The colorful colors are inspired by Matisse’s creations, creating a unique visual experience with exhibition walls full of design. The special chapter “Matisse, Fauvism and Chinese Modern Painting” at the end of the exhibition explores Matisse’s works and how Fauvism spread to China, as well as its impact on China’s modern painting movement from the 1920s to the 1940s. By tracing back to this dusty corner of the “prehistory” of Chinese contemporary art, it shows how Chinese artists at that time were inspired by Matisse to conduct groundbreaking new explorations.
