Discovering New York’s Islands: Beyond Manhattan’s Famous Landmark

It’s another way to see New York: its islands. Not the best known like Manhattan, but the smaller ones like State, Liberty, Governor, Roosevelt or even Ellis Island. That Manhattan is an island is well known.

What is less obvious is that Brooklyn and Queens are too. These neighborhoods correspond to the western tip of Long Island, a very narrow island that juts out into the Atlantic where the very chic Hamptons are located. In fact, of New York’s five boroughs, only the Bronx is connected to the mainland.

Staten Island is the southernmost borough of New York. The north of the island is connected to Manhattan by a free ferry. It’s a very green place with lots of parks, beaches too. There are also museums, including the Richmond Historical Museum, the name of the island until 1975. When you take the boat to Staten Island you pass Liberty Island and Ellis Island. Liberty Island is an island of 6 hectares on which is placed the Statue of Liberty.

Ellis Island is a must-see place in American history. It is here that millions of candidates for immigration have arrived. This small island made it possible to isolate migrants before they were allowed to enter the country. Applications were mostly accepted because of the industrial explosion.

From January 1, 1892 until November 12, 1954, 12 million applications were studied there.
