The historical city plans collected in the book allow a glimpse into the past of 39 Latvian cities from the 17th century to 1987. The maps are complemented by pictures and descriptions of interesting events that took place in the cities during the creation of the plans.
Today, there are 81 cities in Latvia, and approximately 70% of the country’s population lives in them. Some of them are brand new, while others have survived many centuries.
The pictures and descriptions included in the book “Latvian cities in 100 maps” help to get to know the cities as they were a hundred, two hundred or more years ago. The main focus is on Riga, but historical plans of smaller cities are also included – from Ainaži to Zilupe. The book was created by Jānis Barbans, artist Līga Dubrovska. Its co-publishers are the National Library of Latvia (LNB) and the National Archives of Latvia.
This is the third book in the “100 Cards” series. In the centenary of Latvia in 2018, the idea of ”Jāņas sētas” board member Marek Kilupa was implemented and the book “100 years in 100 maps” was published, which reflects the country’s 100-year history using an original source of information – maps.
On the other hand, in 2020, the author of the book, Reinis Vāvers, delved into the wealth of cartographic heritage, which was created in the era of technological development from 1795 to 1917 and tells about the events of Latvian history of that time.
The book presentation event will take place on December 13 at 5 p.m. in the choir of the Latvian National Library (LNB).
