JAKARTA, iNews.id – The footprints of a giant dinosaur nesting in Alaska were discovered by a researcher from the United States. The trail, called The Coliseum, measures 7,500 square meters or slightly larger than a football field.
Quoted from Science Alert, the tracks had actually been found since 2010. However, it was only recently discovered that they were traces of a dinosaur, which is estimated to have lived around 70 million years ago.
Dinosaur tracks are of great interest to researchers. Not without reason because the trail also has a depth as high as a 20-storey building and has paths spread across its various flatirons. “It’s not just one level of rock with tracks on it. It’s a chronology,” said paleontologist Dustin Stewart, who led the study while at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
The tracks, say the researchers, are a combination of prints made in soft mud then hardened and covered. Then the trace prints are preserved because they are filled with sediment.
University of Alaska Fairbanks paleontologist Pat Druckenmiller said the tracks were made by a beautiful dinosaur, which you can tell by the shape of its toes and the texture of its skin. But he didn’t know exactly what species it was.
To note, the tracks found in the Alaskan Mountains are not the only evidence of dinosaur remains. Fossilized plants, pollen grains, and traces of freshwater mussels and invertebrates have also been found in the area.
