On the eve of the European Heritage Days which will be held this year on Saturday September 16 and Sunday September 17, the Tautavel, Préhistoire, Patrimoine association invites to attend the conference: François Arago, Catalan astronomer and French citizen, Friday September 15, at 6:15 p.m., in the village hall.
Originally from Estagel, François Arago is a relatively unknown Catalan celebrity. Astronomer and director of the Paris observatory, he was also a physicist, oceanographer, meteorologist, transmitter of ideas and influencer. This scientific work is impressive and too often underestimated. His participation in the measurement of the Paris meridian for the universal metric definition tends to overshadow many other aspects of his research. Numerous collaborations brought him to meet and work with luminaries such as Laplace, Fresnel, Fizeau, Ampère, Foucault, Humboldt, Le Verrier, etc. With a strong personality, he was also an engaged citizen. A man of conviction, complete and complex, he was involved as much in political life as in that of science. He became a minister and even held the post of President of the Republic for a time! His numerous and international friendships still earn him worldwide fame today.
