You must not believe! Franche-Comté is present almost everywhere in the world, particularly in the United States.
About a year ago, just before returning to JFK airport to return to Paris, we wanted to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET), one of the largest museums in the world, located in New York. Arriving in a room of medieval art, what was our surprise to discover several statues from… Poligny and Arbois. One from Poligny was the centerpiece of the room. Work of Claus de Werve, this Virgin and Child from the early 15th century is of remarkable artistic quality. Too bad the original is no longer in Poligny! Next to it, a Jacques le Majeur from the middle of the 15th century is exhibited where it is indicated on the cartel, in English of course, that it comes from the church of Mouthier le Vieillard (Poligny), just like a Saint John the Baptist from the same era.
That of Arbois, entitled “Aynard Virgin and Child” (second half of the 14th century), perhaps sculpted by André Beauneveu, comes from the Saint-Just church.
God knows how many works formerly preserved in Franche-Comté are today across the Atlantic.
