Discover Woven: A Scenic Retreat in Broadstairs, Inspired by Charles Dickens and Immersed in Nature

Just 100 kilometers from one of the most important metropolises on the planet, London, we find Broadstairs. This is a small city of about 20,000 inhabitants that has been a focus of tourist attraction since the mid-19th century, thanks to the expansion of the steamboat that favored its connection with London and other large English cities. It caught the attention of artists, such as the popular writer Charles Dickenswho wrote some of his great works there that reflected the reality of England that emerged from the Industrial Revolution.

Today it continues to be one of the favorite destinations for those who want to escape the bustle of the big city to take refuge in an almost idyllic setting of coast and sea. And as a result of this, we find interesting projects for first or second residence homes. One example is Woven, a house specifically designed to immerse its residents in nature and located a few meters from the beach.

Nestled among the trees, the objective of its creators was to ensure that this space allows its inhabitants delve into nature, breaking down barriers, both internal and external. On the one hand, its interior stands out for its expansive and open-plan design; on the other, it expands outward to embrace the surroundings through floor-to-ceiling windows on all sides and its sculptural façade ready for nature to grow on and around it.

Giles Miller champions meticulously crafted, experiential design through his eponymous studio. “The buildings we inhabit have a direct impact on our state of mind.. Through their design, they are curators of light and sound, and can expose us to nature and enrich our interactions to dramatically positive effect. We believe that this aspiration, in sync with our latest superficial and sculptural experimentation in the studio, has given rise to a totally unique architectural typology, its creators explain.

With Woven, Miller envisioned the outer skin of the house as a series of intricate and delicately designed screens whose sculptural framework allows the passage of lightviews to the outside and being inhabited by nature, as jasmine, clematis and other local plants are encouraged to grow and wrap the house in foliage and flowers.

“The external surface of Woven is a sculptural work of art that brings architectural functionality to the building by encouraging the growth of jasmine, clematis and other plants through the sculptural lattice and bring nature visibly into the building through the largely glass exterior. The façade makes the building look at home in nature”, they state.

Inside, on the other hand, the warm wood covers almost all the surfaces that are visible to any observer. A Miele kitchen, Vispring beds, Grohe kitchen and bathroom fixtures, Tala lighting, Caesarstone Frozen Terra surfaces and countertops, and L.Ercolani furniture contribute to creating a domestic space ideal for 21st century living.
