Big cities are always tempting playgrounds for nocturnal creatures, and Tokyo proves the rule. In places its wide boulevards turn into narrow passages and mazes of alleys. In these hidden streets lit up in the evening by the signs and colorful lanterns of bars and restaurants, the Japanese capital displays all its charms.
There is the garland of restaurants nestled together under the overhead rails of Shinbashi station, the dense labyrinth of yakitori restaurants [brochettes grillées] hidden in the Omoide Yokocho district, north of Shinjuku Station, or, dull by day, fabulous by night, these bars and sunakku (“snack bars”, very often tiny bars where the owner dispenses alcohol and conversation
