Discover the Unique Kangaroos of Papua: Size, Color, and Conservation Efforts

JAKARTA, HARIANKOTA.COM – It turns out that in Merauke there are also kangaroos, just like in Australia. However, kangaroos in Papua have various shapes, including size and color.

Small kangaroos can be found in the Bumi Cendrawasih area or Papua, the eastern tip of Indonesia.

The names are different, such as ground kangaroo and tree kangaroo. Ground kangaroos can be found in Wasur National Park, while tree kangaroos are more common in the Central Mountains.

The tree kangaroo is a type of Dendrolagus. This type of kangaroo is an adaptation of land kangaroos which utilize empty tree canopies. The canopy area is usually filled with primates, but in Papua the canopy area is empty. So, kangaroos have to survive and adapt to eating the tree shoots above them.

Kangaroos that live in Merauke adapt to the type of ecosystem. Because most of the Wasur area is savanna and open forest, kangaroos in Merauke cannot climb.

The kangaroos here are relatively small. Unlike the large Australian kangaroo, the stock in Merauke is protected because it is endemic to the area.

The largest kangaroo in Merauke is Macropus agilis weighing 25 kg. Then there is the Dorcopsis genus, which lives on trees and weighs 5-7 kg. The smallest is Dorcopsulus, weighing 2-3 kg.

Unfortunately, their numbers are now decreasing in Merauke’s Wasur National Park. The decline in kangaroo numbers is thought to be due to illegal hunting using weapons. Apart from kangaroos, deer in the Wasur National Park (TNW) conservation area are also targets of poachers. The prices of kangaroo and deer meat are very promising.

Wasur National Park has an area of around 431 thousand hectares. Has very high biodiversity potential. This area is also home to several types of migratory birds from Australia and New Zealand. There are 403 bird species, 74 of which are endemic to Papua. Meanwhile, 114 species are protected animals and plants.***
