Her two EPs and her singles on one album didn’t enjoy wide circulation, but let’s not overlook this singer from Port Gibson south of Vicksburg, Mississippi.
For this new opus, she calls on Paul Nelson, a renowned producer whose sharp and restrained guitar playing must be underlined (My time to shine, Dust my broom, Good living blues). McBride is a powerful and energetic singer who does not give in to excess, comfortable with lively tempos (Tom Thumb, I choose me), the poignant slow blues Don’t mind the rainand soul blues ballads I just wanna wake up et Dont love me now, even if the texts of the latter seem a little conventional. There are also covers of standards, but they benefit from an interesting treatment, such as I’m a woman review with soul sauce, and Wang dang doodlein nuance and flexibility.
Not to mention a revolution, we discover with pleasure an artist who evolves in a soul blues register common in her region, but with a vocal talent that should allow her to make herself better known on the international scene.
