HLN Shop highlights five assets of the renovated museum.

1. Walk through seven centuries of art

After eleven years of renovation – worth more than 100 million euros – you can finally rediscover the reopened Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Antwerp a year ago. The building underwent an impressive metamorphosis, although you don’t notice it much from the outside…

After all, the transformation mainly takes place within. The museum became 40 percent larger and houses no fewer than 6,500 works of art. Covering seven centuries of art, from Flemish masters such as van Eyck and Rubens, and world leaders such as Fouquet and Rodin to modern art gems.

2. Two museums for the price of one

Officially, the KMSKA is one museum, but in reality you will discover two completely different art worlds that fit together beautifully. The ‘white space’ is new: a pristine white space that houses the modern art collection. Here you will also find the famous ‘Stairway to heaven’, the stunning staircase that leads you up 100 steps.

The old masters are stunningly beautiful in the classic museum galleries. With walls in Pompeian red and warm olive green and velvet sofas that invite you to take a break, you will feel like you are in a 19th century salon. Although the many multimedia applications make it a contemporary experience.

3. Instagramtour

You have undoubtedly seen beautiful KMSKA photos on social media. Did you know that the museum even created a handy Instagram tour for inspiration? From the corridor with colored stripes by Boy & Erik Stappaerts and the ‘Stairway to heaven’ to ‘Try to kiss the hand’ and a halo effect for ‘The big sun’ by Otto Piene. For the perfect photo or video, just follow the instructions.

You will of course conclude with a final pose on the iconic stairs in front of the KMSKA. We bet this tour will even get your teenagers excited about a museum visit? For younger children, ‘the 10’ is highly recommended, an adventurous trail past ten works of art. From life-size dromedaries and a boulder to a gigantic hand and an Ensorneus from which a snot bubble dangles. With a creative assignment for every installation.

4. Numerous temporary exhibitions

The KMSKA has no fewer than 50 art galleries. Thirteen of them are reserved for the temporary exhibitions in the museum. From October 20 you can admire ‘Krasse Koppen’, an exhibition that revolves around the tronie, the old word for face.

With no fewer than 76 national and international masterpieces by artists such as Rubens, Rembrandt and Vermeer, the exhibition is definitely worth a visit. Never before has this art genre been discussed so extensively. Free to visit with your entrance ticket to the KMSKA. Would you prefer a tour with a guide? Then you pay 90 euros per person.
