Was New York inspired by Paris? When you enter Washington Square Park, in the Greenwich Village district, you will inevitably have a moment of amazement when you see this marble Triumphal Arch which stands in the middle of the park.
The Washington Arch was built in 1892, just over 50 years after the Arc de Triomphe was inaugurated in Paris, erected in 1836, and it has a family resemblance.
A monument to the glory of George Washington
The architect Stanford White was indeed modeled on the Parisian Arc de triomphe. The New York version is however smaller since it is 23 meters high instead of nearly 50 meters for the Parisian arc.
And if the Arc de triomphe de Paris pays homage to Napoleonic victories, the Arc de triomphe in New York honors George Washington, the first American president. You will also see several statues of the famous statesman, with in particular his military period and his civil period. On the pediment, south side, you can also read a quote. Also take the time to sit on a bench: Washington Square Park is always lively! ????
