History of the Strand Book Store
It was in 1927 that Benjamin Pass decided to open a bookstore on 4th avenue, on what was called the Book Row at the time. Book Row was the nickname given to a section of 4th Avenue in Manhattan, famous for housing a large number of bookstores in the early 20th century. This area, particularly active between the 1920s and 1930s, has become a place of pilgrimage for second-hand book seekers.
In 1956, Fred Bass, the son of Benjamin Bass, decided to move the store to the current location on Broadway. The bookstore then benefits from better visibility and larger space to accommodate even more new editions and rare books.
Today, Strand Book Store is always a family storybecause it is Nancy, Fred’s daughter and Ben’s granddaughter, who manages the business.
Despite the advent of the digital age and competition from large bookstore chains, the Strand still continues to attract book lovers. It still remains a unique place today!
What can you find at Strand Book Store?
The surface area of the Strand Book Store is approximately 1,670 square meters and it is often said that the Strand offers “18 miles of books”which is equivalent to approximately 29 kilometers of books…So get ready to spend some time there!!
In fact, these are thousands of books which adorn the shelves of the four floors of the bookstore. New, old, rare, there is truly something for all tastes and budgets.
When we enter the store, we are on the main floor. This is where you can find all the latest news and bestsellers.
