Discover the History of Sauze: A Journey from the Middle Ages to the 20th Century

Inaugurated on August 13 on the occasion of the patronal feast of the Church of Saint-Laurent, the exhibition was produced by the departmental archives. It is accessible free of charge outside and the documents are on the walls of the Notre-Dame de la Colle Church. The exhibition is to be discovered until the end of August.

Work will then take place, before the exhibition is installed there again, in a permanent way. Until then, it remains accessible at the town hall library.

Parchment from 1496

It highlights the particular situation of Sauze: a border village which knew before 1860 a history including it in the duchy of Savoy, then the kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia.

Through the 13 panels, which offer a dive from the Middle Ages to the XXe century, it is thus possible to appreciate several times of the life of the commune, such as the convention of 1326 on the grazing rights granted by the lord of Sauze on a territory straddling several communes. But also the parchment of 1496 which attests to an agreement between Sauze and Guillaumes to delimit their territories. Sauze is then a Sardinian enclave in France. The meeting also allows us to return to the construction of the War Memorial approved in 1921, where the names of the sixteen Sauzois who gave their lives for France are engraved. “It is a received idea to believe that the life of a village is a long calm river… It is quite the opposite and this exhibition proves it to us”, commented the President of the Alpes-Maritimes Department Charles Ange Ginésy.
