The Rhine in board games: A special exhibition in the Binger Museum am Strom shows board games that all have something to do with the Rhine. The first games of this kind existed in the 19th century.
Rhein-Spiele have been around since 1840
The oldest complete historical Rhine game in the exhibition comes from England, from around 1840. It stands in the middle of the colorful exhibition room in a rectangular glass case.
The game board shows the light blue Rhine, on the right and left of the banks there are red circles on which the game figures walk.
This example is a so-called running game. That means you discover the Rhine and its landscapes while playing with your character.
Exhibition invites you to play
The exhibition room was also laid out with an oversized colorful game board of a Rhine running game. You can also play there – all other Rhine games are in display cases.
Over 100 board and card games can be seen in Bingen, all of which were acquired from a previous sponsor of the museum, in the art trade, at auctions and on the Internet. The probably unique Rheinspiel collection has since been donated to the museum.
