Directed by Edward Zwick, to whom we owe in particular The Last Samurai and Blood Diamond, Love, and other drugs plunges the viewer into New York in the 90s. Jamie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a formidable young commercial whose insurance – and the advantageous physique- are rife both with women and in the implacable universe of the pharmaceutical industry where, between antidepressants and sexual dopants, he finally manages to sell everything.
But there is one person who seems oblivious to Jamie’s charm: Maggie (Anne Hathaway), a very attractive and furiously independent young woman who has decided to live only hand to mouth.
Love, and other drugs, inspired by the book Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman by Jamie Reidy, in which the author recounts his own experience within the Pfizer laboratories, is a pretty nugget. It is a funny and moving romantic comedy, which distinguishes itself by denouncing the practices of the pharmaceutical industry. Not to mention a raw look, which earned it an “R” rating when it was released in American theaters.
The film, which marks the reunion of Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway a few years after The Secret of Brokeback Mountain, offers the actress the delicate role of a young woman suffering from Parkinson’s disease. “The character of Maggie (…) is another one of those bold choices that she has always made”, explains Edward Zwick. “Anne reveals a new facet of her talent, she takes an even greater risk and pushes her own limits.”
