Discover the Hidden Charms of Albany, New York: A Must-Visit Capital City

Points of interest in the city include the must-see Empire State Plaza, created by Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller in the 1960s. This square has 11 buildings and five towers on 98 acres and among its attractions are the New York State Museum with cultural and natural history exhibits from the area; the 42-story Corning Tower with an observation deck for views of the city; Art at the Plaza, a collection of 92 works of art, mostly by local artists; and The Egg, an oval-shaped arts and entertainment center named after its appearance as a gigantic egg.

The Albany Capitol, in the Italian and French Renaissance and Romanesque styles, has served as the center of government since 1880. Another architectural gem, the city hall, Albany City Hall, dates from the 19th century and has been called “one of the most beautiful.” North American buildings by architectural experts. It has a tower with a bell tower with 60 bells from 1927 that is still played today. Other must-sees and pastimes include a walk along the Hudson River to see the Albany Harbor, old Dutch houses and the city’s elegant mansions. Eagles are frequently sighted during the walk. Washington Park, an 83-acre park at Madison Avenue and Willet Street, is a beautiful site and home to a festival each spring with 100,000 tulips, an arts and crafts fair, and special events.
