The Goya Museum is a unique Hispanic art museum in France, presenting creation in Spain from antiquity to the 20th century. It is located in the former 17th century episcopal palace whose plans were drawn by Jules-Hardouin Mansart, one of the architects of Versailles. It has just been the subject, with the support of the State (to the tune of nearly 2,210,000 euros), of a major renovation and a total overhaul of the museum itinerary. The doubling of exhibition space allows its remarkable art collection to be displayed over more than 1,500 m².
This superb museum, created in 1840, owes its Hispanic vocation to a bequest of the painter Marcel Briguiboul in 1894. It is today the only French institution to offer a complete panorama of Spanish art, from the Catalan primitives to the great masters of the Century. of gold, from Goya to Picasso, from Spanish religious art to contemporary art, passing through the decorative arts or pre-Columbian art. It presents works by Juan Rexach, Velázquez, Murillo, Ribera, Valdés Leal, Alonso Cano, Pacheco, Zurbaran, and of course Goya and three of his capital paintings: the Self-Portrait with Glasses, the Portrait of Francisco del Mazo, The Junta of the Philippines, and a series of engravings like The Caprices and The Assembly of the Philippines.
The museum also has works by French artists inspired by Spanish painting from the Golden Age, such as Fantin-Latour for The Young Beggar after Murillo. It also has a collection of Hispanic coins that spans from the Celtiberian period (2nd-3rd centuries BC) to the reign of Charles IV (1788-1808), Iberian bronze statues from the 6th century BC, sculptures Baroque polychrome wood without forgetting a collection of weapons. The Goya Museum also continues to enrich itself with remarkable pieces and an agreement now binds it to the Louvre. A partnership that paves the way for projects ranging from temporary exhibitions to scientific expertise.
