“It’s a good way for children to avoid spending their days behind screens! exclaims Mr. Diaz, youth coordinator for the city of Thionville.
That day, about ten children from the social center, located in the Saint-Pierre district, tried their hand at handibasket on the banks of Thionville. “This initiative raises young people’s awareness of disabled sport and then it amuses them to be able to play on wheelchairs”, explains Arthur Peirera, who has participated as a speaker in summer events since 1994. It is a pleasant pastime for this man who also goes to schools to introduce this sport. “I liked it too much, besides I’m too strong! laughs Theo, 11, after taking part in handibasket. “Children especially enjoy sports. They can discover all these activities and the city helps a lot,” says an educator from the social center.
Just behind the basketball court, other young people try freestyle football, with Lylian Altemayer, a specialist in the discipline. This consists of performing tricks using a football. On the other side of the banks, two teenagers are playing chess on tables made available by the city.
In addition to these activities, it is possible to find football and rugby on sand, fencing, kayaking and other activities to be found on the city website or on the banks directly.
