The International Light Festival, LuzMadrid, an initiative of the Area of Culture, Tourism and Sports, will fill the capital with art and light during the nights from Friday to Sunday, displaying around twenty artistic light installations in four large areas of the city: Paisaje de la Luz, Plaza de España, Matadero Madrid and Madrid Río and Carabanchel.
Through the creations of more than twenty national and international artists, some from other festivals and others created specifically for LuzMadrid, the public will be able to observe the urban landscape and cultural heritage with a different perspective. Attendees will be able to move freely within the four zones that make up the festival, distributed among the districts of Centro, Retiro, Moncloa-Aravaca, Arganzuela and Carabanchel and begin the itinerary through the pieces as they wish. During the LuzMadrid celebration days, the use of public transport is recommended.
Large format lighting works
To stop time is the proposal of the Juan Gómez-Cornejo National Theater Award for the El Retiro park, a work specially designed for the pond and monument to Alfonso XII. Already in the Plaza de España, the French artist Nicolas Paolozzi poses Kontakt Extended, a live architecture that combines sound, light and movement. Inside the Church of Santa Teresa and San José, there will be Looks, an immersive light installation by Carlos Torrijos. On the façade of the Senate expansion, the urban artist SUSO33 proposes ( ((GraffPhónica)) ) and on the façade of the Royal Palace, Eugenio Ampudia, one of the most renowned Spanish artists, presents Hurricane (An atmospheric phenomenon).
For the Arab Wall, the Italian-Argentine artist Ezequiel Nobili has created a work site-specific, Mayrit. Water, stone, fire and flesh. The Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Madrid collaborates with LuzMadrid thanks to the intervention of the artistic duo Antonello Ghezzi, who animates the façade with the light installation Shooting Stars.
Octantis It is the star located in the Matadero Madrid warehouse, the work of the artist Ricardo Morcillo. In the Matadero Madrid Workshop Space, you can see Observable landscapesby 3Dinteractive studio artists Ana Marcos and Alfonso Villanueva.
In this edition, a new program called ‘Emerging Lights’ is also presented, curated by Julieta de Haro at DiMad (Matadero Madrid Design Space), with which it aims to give visibility to young creators, artists and light designers in an international environment.
Outside DiMad, Pablo Bordons will hang In-finitud and Paula Cremades, in 0x1gen0, will invite the public to see DiMad’s space transformed into a greenhouse. Intervened bodies, a video art installation by Ángel Sevillano, will place figures on the ground, inspired by those that mark the location of a dead person at a crime scene with chalk. The Galo and Atalanta collective proposes an immersive lighting construction titled Nostalgia of Displacement.
Already in the Arganzuela Greenhouse you will find Lunar Oscillationslighting and sound intervention by Xavi Bové.
Under the Prague Bridge hypostylea light and sound essay created especially for the festival by Cube.bz, is inspired by the monumentalism of temples such as Karnak or Luxor.
At the Toledo Bridge, the public will be able to visit Lampounettean art installation by the French company Tilt.
In Carabanchel, in the vicinity of the Fernando Lázaro Carreter Cultural Center, there will be VJYourself!, an installation developed by Playmodes Studio. In the same district, Espacio Insight, by Gonzalo Borondo, proposes two installations taken from his individual exhibition for LuzMadrid 2023 Inheritancefrom the Esteban Vicente Museum of Contemporary Art: Ether, Cap I and Cap II. The Paco Graco collective will show the installation He S De Rojascreated in 2022 for the façade of the Gruta 77 concert hall. The creative space Hyper House will host the exhibition resulting from the Re/Utopia artistic residencies, in which Pablo Sandoval and Carlos Klett participated. Re/Utopia part of the current conflict between staying in the city or migrating to nature.
LuzMadrid schedules
