Built in 1897, the Renaissance-style building is inspired by the great castles of France. It was originally developed by William RH Martin and designed by renowned architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh. To meet the growing demand for the neighborhood, Martin and Hardenbergh teamed up again between 1901 and 1910 to expand the hotel.

By 1910, when the expansion was completed, the building was known as one of the most elite hotels in New York City.

In 1989, developer Harold Thurman completely renovated the hotel and after a series of brand reinventions, the hotel was designated a City of London Landmark. NY on May 5, 1998.
