Discover the Colombian Pianist Pablo Mayor’s Folklore Urbano Orchestra and their Mission to Unify People through Latin Music in New York’s El Barrio

With the mission of unifying people through Latin music in the capital of the world, Colombian pianist, composer and artistic director Pablo Mayor brought the Folklore Urbano orchestra to life.

“This is a multinational band, this is a band that represents New York. It is a band that represents each one of us who contributes here with original music a little bit of our homeland and we make a little bit of food for everyone,” said Mayor.

Pablo dedicated his first sixteen years in New York to composing, producing and promoting music from his native Colombia.

“Urban Folklore began as an investigation into Colombian music and jazz, I always had the concern of making music to dance, it is the music I feel, the music of the people,” added Mayor.

His band, made up of a large diverse group of musicians, presents various rhythms such as cumbia, salsa, bullerengue to jazz band format.

But like a good Caleño, this project called El Barrio Project, is a repertoire of original songs in which Pablo presented a panorama of East Harlem, known as El Barrio, the place where one of the most popular genres in the world, salsa, was born.

“I am attracted to neighborhood music, the music of the town, and I am attracted to the way in which there are things that people perhaps in the United Nations or in high government places do not see, that is applied and is how people learn to live together,” said Mayor.

This Saturday, April 29, at the Flushing Town Hall, the orchestra will present El Barrio Project, Caribe, a music and dance show for the whole family that celebrates the roots and traditions of Latin America.
