Discover the Charming World of “Pansija pili” with Anšlavs Eglītis – A Multi-Part Film Series Set in 1920s Latvia

Imagine a beautiful summer day. You get up, and through the half-open window you are greeted by a light rustle of wind, a rooster’s economic “kikerigoo” and a human voice. Did someone actually just read poetry? Or just called for a missing chicken… Either way, a new day has begun! You have to throw a dressing gown around your shoulders and go downstairs to look, maybe it’s already morning the coffee.

This is exactly the idyllic aftertaste left by the new multi-part film “Pansija pili” (Mistrus Media, 2024), which is divided into seven feature film series and one documentary film. The center of the humor and unpredictability of life excursion is future writer Anšlavs Eglītis together with his younger brother Vidvudas and father Viktors. They start farming in the manor, which was awarded to the writer, poet and art theoretician Viktor Eglītis (1877-1945) by the still relatively newly established state of Latvia for his special merits.

The inhabitants of the area, the characters stuck in the past, the fine circles of the city and the Latvian intelligentsia interact to create the “stage of one summer”, on which we see a gorgeous variation of the Latvia of the 20s of the 20th century.

It is interesting that for the first time one of the works of Anšlav Egliš (1906-1993) was transferred to the screen already in 1990, when the director Pēteris Krylovs took the short prose work of the writer with the same name as the basis of his film “Maestro”. The work published in 1936 already begins the author’s bibliography.

In 2018, however, director Anna Viduleja shared her vision of the writer’s novel “Homo novus” (1946) with moviegoers.

The directors of the new project are Andis Mizišs, Marta Elīna Martinsone, Dāvis Sīmanis, and Gints Grūbe for the documentary series. Cinematographer Andrejs Rudzāts, producers Inese Boka-Grūbe and Gints Grūbe, script created by Tabita Rudzāte and Ivo Briedis, main artist of the film Kristīne Jurjāne, artist Jānis Kalniņš, make-up artist Ilze Trumpe, costume designers Kristīne Jurjāne and Rūta Kuplā.
