Attractive new vacation deals in the Florida Keys & Key West
The deep blue Atlantic on the one hand and the turquoise Caribbean Sea on the other, a relaxed lifestyle and legendary sunsets: The tropical chain of islands in the Florida Keys offers a picture-perfect holiday backdrop and a wide range of opportunities for an eventful break – plus lots of new things this summer.
When the sun sinks into the sea…
Hardly any other place is as famous for its spectacular sunsets as the Florida Keys & Key West. From the legendary Sundowners restaurant in Key Largo, you can embark on a sunset cruise with up to six people on one of the typical round tiki boats and watch from the water how the sun slowly sinks into the sea as a red ball of fire. Cruisin’ Tikis Key Largo also offers night-time tours for those who prefer to be on the road a little later, romantically, under the tropical starry sky.
Of course, you can also enjoy the sunset while relaxing on the beach, for example in the newly renovated Marker 88 restaurant in Islamorada. Guests can enjoy the Florida, Caribbean and French-Polynesian delicacies either at the covered tables outside or at the seats directly on the beach. The restaurant also has two alfresco tiki bars and two boat docks where skippers can dock their boats for lunch or dinner. In the newly added green area you can also admire the gumbo-limbo trees with their shiny red bark, which are typical of Florida.
Reopening of a landmark
In Islamorada, the newly opened Oceanside Safari Restaurant and Lounge invites you to linger on the seafront. It stands on the site of the locals’ favorite Safari Lounge, which not only became famous as a filming location for the Netflix series Bloodline, but is also famous for the numerous exotic animal heads on the walls. Animal motifs also determine the decor of the new restaurant, albeit in a much more modern design.
Corals, the endangered jewels of the island chain
The 180-mile-long Florida Keys island chain is home to America’s only living coral reef. In order to preserve this unique habitat, there are numerous coral breeding stations on site. The Key Largo Coral Nursery, Mote Marine Laboratory’s third onshore facility, is offering a new weekly “Slice of Paradise” activity. Pieces of coral are carefully crushed using a precision diamond saw.
Participants then carefully place them on ceramic plinths where they will grow in the coral nursery on land. Once the fragments are large enough, they are planted underwater in Florida’s coral reef. The program also includes a visit to the breeding station. Visitors will also learn about endangered coral species and Mote’s strategy to address coral genetic diversity and resilience.
Key West Aquarium shines with a new design
The Key West Aquarium, popular with guests and locals alike, has undergone a major makeover. The facade has been restored and modeled after the original open-air aquarium, which first opened its doors in 1937. The new design features a nautical-themed fountain and an image of the 1930s aquarium. The aquarium’s touch tank now has a vertical tank with tropical fish. The new audiovisual show “20,000 Leagues under the Sea” with a hammerhead shark entertains young and old visitors.
Hotel introduces aluminum recycling
The Hyatt Centric Key West Resort & Spa in Key West is now making another active contribution to environmental protection. In collaboration with Proud Source Water, the “Infinite Bottle Project” was launched, which is about recycling aluminum waste collected in the hotel complex and supplying it as bottles for a new, sustainable use. The property is the first Hyatt resort to implement the program, serving Proud Source Water drinking water in the resulting nearly “reusable” aluminum bottles.
The Florida Keys & Key West consist of several hundred coral islands, which stretch like a string of pearls from the southernmost tip of Florida over 250 kilometers into the open sea. The most important islands are connected by bridges, forming the “most beautiful cul-de-sac in the world”. The tropical climate guarantees pleasantly warm (bathing) temperatures all year round in the five regions of Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and Key West. The Keys, with their fine sandy beaches and the third largest coral reef in the world, are also considered a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, nature lovers and those who enjoy life.
