A fascinating reconstruction: Notre Dame is burning (Prime Video)

Synopsis

In this feature film, Jean-Jacques Annaud reconstructs hour by hour the incredible reality of the events of April 15, 2019, when Notre-Dame Cathedral suffered the most significant disaster in its history, and how women and men will put their lives in danger in an incredible and heroic rescue.

CNET France’s opinion

By mixing images filmed during the tragedy and scenes recreated from scratch for the needs of the film, Notre Dame is burning takes the viewer behind the scenes of an extraordinary rescue. From the start of the fire to its extinction, the film relates the drama suffered by the most famous cathedral in the world and stays as close as possible to the firefighters to show the infernal succession of obstacles, setbacks and other malfunctions that they encountered during the fire before managing to overcome it.

Some leads on the origins of the disaster have been put forward but Jean-Jacques Annaud does not take a particular position because he is not there to lead the investigation, his aim being above all to document the facts. We might then expect a cold, soulless film, and yet the director manages to infuse it (with the help of very effective actors) with a lot of emotion and tension, and plenty of what will keep the viewer glued to their couch.

A crazy series as you wish: Killer Coaster (Prime Video)

Synopsis

Summer 1998. Palavas-les-Flots. While the World Cup is in full swing, Sandrine Laplace, a clumsy contract worker who thinks she’s a CIA agent, decides to investigate a mysterious accident that occurred on the ghost train at the local fairground. Incompetent but reckless, Sandrine infiltrates a merciless world – made up of clan wars, cotton candy and bumper cars – and must form an alliance with Carmen and Yvane, two fairground people who are completely opposed to each other. What if there was a killer at the carnival?

CNET France’s opinion

We completely change register with Killer Coaster, series by Nikola Lange and Thomas Mansuy which stars Alexandra Lamy, Audrey Lamy and Chloé Jouannet. The three women form an explosive trio in this detective comedy which flirts with the absurd. The thriller side of the show is successful in the staging, with great discoveries in the images and the use of the funfair setting, even if we are not dealing with the police investigation of the century either.

The great strength of the series lies in its characters, very well interpreted, and on a mixture of genres which always hits the mark. Everything is well balanced so as to never fall into the heavy or boring, and we take great pleasure in following the adventures of this troupe of fairgrounds. In short, it’s funny, captivating, successful.

An astonishing film: An ideal man (Netflix)

Synopsis

Mathieu has always aspired to become a recognized author. A dream that seems inaccessible to him because despite all his efforts, it has never succeeded in being published. His destiny changes the day he comes across the manuscript of a lonely old man who has just passed away. Mathieu decides to take it and sign the text with his name. Having become the most prominent new hope in French literature, and while the wait for his second novel becomes more pressing every day, Mathieu will plunge into a false and criminal spiral to preserve his secret at all costs…

CNET France’s opinion

With this film, Yann Gozlan offers us a gripping thriller with a most disturbing Pierre Niney. One of the most talented actors of his generation plays here a writer lacking talent whose adventures follow one another without interruption. Niney delivers a flawless performance and does not hesitate to create discomfort to highlight a character in distress.

The scenario ofAn ideal man is not perfect but the film remains effective entertainment whose story takes the viewer into an infernal spiral from which we cannot easily turn our eyes away, because there is always something fascinating in the characters who sink into impossible situations.
