What if we explored the seabed while discovering an astonishing sport? This is what Nathalie Simon offers us in this new episode of “Waouh le Sud!” » special apnea! Let’s go for 26 minutes of discoveries and wonder…
As visual as it is impressive, freediving is practiced at sea, in a swimming pool, statically or dynamically. And while staying underwater without breathing seems relatively basic, the sport requires a lot of training and discipline.

Rather simple on paper, static apnea consists of blocking your breathing without moving for as long as possible. It is practiced for the pleasure of remaining immersed in water for many minutes, but also to relax, or to train for other sports, such as sea diving.
For the world record holder Stephane Mifsud, The key to success is above all to listen to your body. Like any sporting discipline, static apnea must be practiced regularly and accompanied in order to progress. With the ultimate objective of drastically reducing the number of heartbeats per minute, similar to what marine mammals do.

It is the world record of static apnea and it is Stéphane Mifsud who holds it. Since 2009, no one has managed to exceed this time which, we grant you, is impressive.
Already when he was little, Stéphane swam in the waters of Mauritius and Reunion Island. It was with his father that he began his first freediving, notably to hunt fish. And it was around the age of 30, after meetings with major specialists in the field, that he really got involved in freediving, to the point of becoming a multiple world champion.

Beyond regular training, Stéphane Mifsud has developed a unique technique to be able to stay in apnea underwater for a very long time. He implemented “the carp method”. By swallowing air, it makes inflate your ribcage and back, which allows it to store 4 liters more air than an ordinary human being.
The world champion submitted his carp technique to the doctors at the Sainte-Marguerite hospital in Marseille. Accompanied by these oxygen and respiration professionals, he has carried out and continues to carry out numerous examinations to try to improve ever more.
