Launching a NASA page on Wednesday (02/10/2024), the sun is a medium-sized star formed by very hot gas, mostly hydrogen and helium. Stars shine by burning hydrogen into helium in their cores.
When its hydrogen fuel runs out, the star begins to burn helium. This causes the amount of energy released by the sun to be very large, causing the star to expand to hundreds or even thousands of times its original size.
This phenomenon is expected to occur on the sun around five to six billion years from now. When the sun changes into a red giant star, this star will sweep the planets around it, starting from Mercury, Venus, Mars and Earth.
Astronomers estimate that the Earth will look like KMT-2020-BLG-0414 if it survives the solar transformation. The Earth will move away from the dying sun.
Quoted from the Space page on Wednesday (02/10/2024), researchers cannot yet confirm whether the Earth will survive this catastrophe. The reason is, it is estimated that there is only about a billion years left on our planet before the oceans of the Earth will be cleaned as a result of the growing greenhouse effect.
