During Gamescom we had the opportunity to start with King of Meat, a new game from Amazon Game Studios. Again a multiplayer game, although this time it wasn’t an MMORPG, but a co-op dungeon crawler party game.
King of Meat is made by developer Glowmade and is set in a world where King of Meat is the biggest, and almost only, game show on TV. Different participants are admitted to a prison and the goal is to reach the end of the dungeon alive, preferably with the highest score.
That is the goal of the game as well. In King of Meat you can play a lot of dungeons in co-op with up to four players, each with a lot of obstacles, enemies and small puzzles. The better you do throughout the dungeon, the more points you get and the more rewards you get.
King of Meat chooses a style that could be called ‘Fall Fuys on steroids’. Basically it’s a lot like that game, but a lot more over the top and definitely with a lot more explosions.
The few dungeons we were able to play were still very simple, but they were still a good challenge and showed that cooperation can definitely be useful. There was some difference in goals as well. In one dungeon we had to collect as many points as possible, and in the other dungeon there were more puzzles to get to the end.
King of Meat also focuses hard on customization. That starts with your own character, of course. There are many ways to customize your character to your own style, with outfits, masks, stickers and so on. You can also change your loadout and, for example, choose a heavy hammer instead of a sword to attack your enemies with. You also have a number of special attacks, such as a giant horse hoof that salt your enemies out of nowhere. There is nothing too sinister in King of the Flesh.
The most interesting aspect of the game is that you will be able to build dungeons yourself. We have not yet been able to verify this ourselves, but it ensures that King of Meat will have unlimited content in principle and there will undoubtedly be many tough challenges created by the community. If King of Meat can get off to a smooth start at launch, it could live for a long time.
