A 264 hectare natural space designed for the public, Clos Gaillard is a true summary of scrubland which allows walkers to familiarize themselves with the Mediterranean vegetation. Find the site in our “Seen from the sky” series.
About ten kilometers north of Nîmes, Clos Gaillard is a popular area for hikers. It is home to several discovery trails of the Nîmes scrubland, allowing walkers to discover the vegetation of our territory and highlighting, in particular, the dry stone typical of the scrublands.
Four Short Hiking (PR) circuits exist:
blue course: 700 m (with “a call to the senses” themed trail designed and adapted for children aged 4 to 6 and intended to help them discover the scrubland using their different senses). red course: 3,400 m green course: 5,400 m yellow course: 6,6500 m
The water circuit, the built heritage (capitelles and dry stone walls) and the relief are the common threads of the trails.
Remember that Clos Gaillard has been devastated several times by fires. The site was reforested in 1974 by the City of Nîmes and the National Forestry Office; but the terrible fire of the summer of 1989 destroyed 128 ha of Clos Gaillard. This disaster is at the origin of a reflection for this redevelopment allowing a requalification of the landscape according to ecological, landscape, cultural and educational criteria.
